Custom Suits in Columbus, Ohio: What to Expect
Most men have never had a suit made for them. They've borrowed the experience of wearing one — pulled something off a rack, made it work, moved on. So when the idea of a custom suit comes up, the questions are understandable.
What does the process actually look like? How long does it take? What do I need to bring? Is this for someone like me?
If you're in Columbus and considering custom tailoring for the first time, this is what to expect when you walk through the door at Arre Glado Studio.
It Starts With a Conversation
Before a single measurement is taken, we talk.
Not about fabric swatches or lapel styles — not yet. We talk about you. Where you're wearing this suit. What your days look like. Whether you're on your feet or in boardrooms or both. What you've worn before and what never quite felt right about it.
This part matters more than most people expect. A suit built for a trial attorney who stands in front of juries is a different garment than one built for a creative director who moves between studios and client meetings. Same craft, different intention. We need to understand yours before we can build something that serves it.
The Measurements
Once we understand your context, we measure — precisely, and across more points than any size chart accounts for.
Chest. Waist. Hips. Shoulder width. Sleeve length. Neck. Back length. Posture. How your body is shaped when you're standing naturally, not when you're holding yourself stiff for a tape measure.
This is where custom tailoring diverges completely from anything off-the-rack. We're not finding the closest approximation to your body. We're documenting it — so that the pattern we build starts from you, not from an industry average.
Fabric and Details
After measurements, we move into the elements that define the garment's character.
Fabric is where a suit begins to take on a life of its own. Weight, weave, and composition determine not just how a suit looks but how it behaves — how it drapes, how it breathes, how it holds up over years of wear. We'll guide you through options that match your lifestyle and the occasions you're dressing for.
From there: lapel style, button stance, lining, pocket details, trouser break. These aren't arbitrary choices — each one shapes the overall silhouette and communicates something about the man wearing it. We'll make sure every decision is intentional.
The Build and Fitting Process
Once the details are set, construction begins. Your pattern is drafted, your fabric is cut, and the garment is built to your measurements from the ground up.
Depending on the complexity of the commission, you can expect a timeline of several weeks. We'll schedule a fitting once the garment is at a stage where adjustments can be made — checking the shoulder set, the chest, the waist suppression, the trouser seat and rise. This is where we refine everything until it's exactly right.
No rushing. No approximating. The suit is finished when it's finished correctly.
What to Bring to Your First Appointment
You don't need to arrive with answers — that's what the consultation is for. But a few things help:
A sense of occasion. Know roughly what you're building toward. A wedding, a work wardrobe, a specific event — the more context you can share, the better we can build for it.
A shirt and dress shoes. If you have them, wear what you'd typically wear under a suit. It helps us see how the garment will actually function in your life.
An open mind on details. If you've always defaulted to navy, we might show you why charcoal works harder for your wardrobe. Come ready to consider.
